Montrose (horse)
Montrose (1884-1898) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse that is best remembered for winning the 1887 Kentucky Derby. He was foaled in Kentucky and owned by the Labold brothers from Cincinnati, Ohio. He was ridden by Isaac E. Lewis〔(Notable Kentucky African Americans Database: Lewis, Isaac E )〕 in the Derby.〔(Montrose Pedigree )〕 The brothers made $20,000 on Montrose's win in the Derby.〔Chew, Peter, The Kentucky Derby: The First 100 Years, Houghton Mifflin Co., Boston, 1974〕
Montrose also won the Morrissey Stakes〔(NY Times. Aug. 29, 1888 )〕 and Great Western Handicap〔(NY Times. July 8, 1888 )〕 when he was a four-year-old and won the Kearney Stakes run in Saratoga, New York as a five-year-old.〔"Results at Saratoga: Montrose wins Kearney Stakes for his owners." ''New York Times''. Aug. 4, 1889 ()〕 Montrose died on July 30, 1898 at the age of 14 years at the farm of Allen W. Thurman in Columbus, Ohio.
